In the final four weeks of each semester I take a group of around 100 first year students and introduce them to composition. The first semester work is based on the techniques of Messiaen, particularly as found in the 'Quartet for the end of Time'. In the second semester, using Klaus Lang's 'einfalt. stille.' as a springboard, I look at how new music and the notion of the score has changed since, in Boulez's words, Webern 'broke the habit of horizontal-vertical opposition'. Students are also introduced to alternative pitch organisation systems and extended instrumental techniques.
A 10-week aural and presentation training course for first year undergraduates.
I have co-conducted the School of Music's contemporary music ensemble, LS Two, for three years. Part of this role involves introducing student performers to new techniques and aesthetic approaches, providing support, coaching and context when needed.
I have conducted all seven new student works composed for the ensemble during my tenure.
