About

I am interested in assessing the impact of land and water management interventions, both in physical and economic terms, at different scales, and considering diverging socio-cultural perceptions of various stakeholders. This ranges from a farmer who, based on his or her perceived benefits and constraints decides to adopt or not to adopt technologies, to environmental policy-making where the objective of equitable and sustainable resource use and rural development is easier claimed than reached. I am also interested in the role science can play to bring together stakeholders at different levels and to resolve conflicts of interest.

My current research is undertaken within the DESIRE project, a large EU research project aiming to establish promising alternative land use and management conservation strategies in sixteen degradation and desertification hotspots around the world. The project adopts an integrative participatory approach, in which local stakeholder groups and scientists collaborate to identify remediation technologies. I developed a model for spatially explicit cost-effectiveness and cost-benefit analyses of  land degradation remediation technologies, scaling up evaluation from field to regional level. For a case study site in Spain, I am also developing a regional economic model based on input/output modeling that will explore interrelations between agriculture and other sectors of the economy.
