About

I study the Roman Empire, particularly urbanism and the relations between Romans and non-Romans at the edges of the Empire. I have a strong commitment to archaeological excavation and fieldwork. For many years I have directed excavations at the city of Pompeii, where my focus is on exploring the social dynamics of the population of the ancient city.  I co-direct the Anglo-American Project in Pompeii with Damian Robinson (Oxford University). This is now working on a series of monograph reports after a long programme of excavation and fieldwork in insula VI,1 at Pompeii from 1994 to 2008. I also co-direct with Wolfgang Ehrhardt (Universitat Freiburg) a new project - Social Hierarchy in Pompeii - which is investigating another part of the city, insula V,2.

In my work on frontier regions in Britain, a monograph on excavations at Binchester Roman fort is in press (2010), and work is continuing on the monographs for the Newstead Research Project, which explored relations between indigenous communities and Roman incomers in southern Scotland.

I am also interested in long-distance contacts between the ancient Mediterranean world and India.
